stitching the heart back together

I've been writing a lot lately, and have a new book in the works which will be released in 2018, Stitching the Heart Back Together.

During my 16 years working in philanthropy, I noticed that many of the people receiving our grants had a story or two about having come through a dark time, and as a result, created a life rooted in service to others. I could relate because I, too, years earlier, had founded a grief support center and written my first book, Being There for Someone in Grief, while healing from the murder of my best friend.

This connection piqued my interest, and I began to notice everywhere, stories of people making a natural progression from grief to generosity. People whose lives had become more meaningful after what seemed like a meaningless loss—whose heart had found some resonance with a bigger heart of humanity. And yet, all around me I also saw the opposite—people whose life had become more contracted after a divorce, a death, a painful childhood, or any one of a million other trials that bring us to our knees.

What makes the difference, I began to wonder? What opens or closes the heart? My curiosity ultimately led to writing Stitching the Heart Back Together. This book is an exploration of these three powerful forces, and a budding revelation of their relationship together. Each, alone, has the strength to bolster or humble us; yet when we understand and experience their astonishing alchemy, the challenges of our lives become less perplexing, and the wonders more graceful.

Thank you for giving me an advance copy of stitching the heart back together. This has become a book I keep by my bedside to remind me what it is to be human.  Much gratitude for this companion.

I loved how open you were in sharing details of your journey, including your insights about the profound and remarkable power of generosity, arising from the ashes of personal loss.  I think it will become a model for lots of readers to discover meaning in every experience they have, no matter how dark or difficult.  It’s how we transform and grow, isn't it?
